A strategy known as the “New Carrington” master plan was first outlined in 2016, with revisions made and published in 2019. In 2020, a new master plan was released, detailing the way in which vast expanses of land, including that of Carrington, will be renovated to provide significant housing, industry and warehousing, manufacturing, new community facilities and green infrastructure, and strategic road infrastructure improvements. This is all part of a plan which suggests that Carrington has the potential to meet significant Greater Manchester wide housing and employment needs, in a sustainable location, on a part previously developed site, which will also deliver localised regeneration and place making benefits.
The name Carrington may mean “estate associated with a man called Cara”; or it may break down into two parts, with the first part of the name being derived from caring, meaning “tending or herding” or cring, which means “river bend”, so either “place associated with herding”, or “settlement by a river bend”
Carrington was formerly the home of Bury FC’s football training ground, and is now home to the Carrington Power Station which was completed in 2016 at a cost of £500 million.
