Clifton is a small town in the borough of Salford, Greater Manchester. Clifton is located along the side of the Irwell Valley and was once an important centre for the local coal mining industry. Clifton lies five miles north west of Manchester on the A666 road (Manchester Road) to Bolton. The township covers a total of 850 acres in the valley of the River Irwell, which forms the north east boundary. The Manchester to Preston train line runs through Clifton, providing it with a service that connects the town to major nearby cities.

Average local house prices in Clifton at the time of writing were £158,147, up 10% on the previous year. The majority of sales in Clifton during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £155,267. Terraced properties sold for an average of £133,639, with detached properties selling for around £261,136.

The Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal passes through Clifton. The town is home to the Clifton Aqueduct which carries the canal across the River Irwell. There are future plans to restore the canal for leisure use, while the Aqueduct remains a Grade II listed building.

The name Clifton is derived from the Old English clif and tun, and means the “settlement near a cliff, slope or riverbank” – referring to its proximity to the nearby local river and canal.

With regards to the industry and local business in Clifton, the town is home to a few prominent business names: The Pilkington’s Lancastrian Pottery was established in 1892, The Chloride Electrical Storage Company opened its battery factory at Clifton Junction in 1893, and Magnesium Elektron Ltd built a large factory at Clifton Junction to produce magnesium metal in 1936.

Clifton is also home to two schools and three local pubs, as well as The British Army’s Territorial Army Centre on Manchester Road which is known as “Clifton Barracks”.
