Didsbury is a suburban area in the borough of Manchester, with a population of around 26,788 people. Near to junction 5 of Manchester’s ring road and the M60 motorway, Didsbury sits on the north bank of the River Mersey and is just 4.5 miles south of Manchester city centre. Its local airport, Manchester Airport, is only 4 miles away to the South.

Average local house prices in Didsbury at the time of writing were £305,979, down 2% on the previous year. The majority of sales around Didsbury during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £348,415. Flats sold for an average of £225,617, with terraced properties selling for around £309,063.

Didsbury was largely rural until the mid-19th century, when it underwent development and urbanisation during the Industrial Revolution. During the Victorian expansion across Manchester, Didsbury developed as a prosperous location – in fact, a few mansions from the period still exist in Didsbury though they have now been converted to nursing homes and offices.

The name Didsbury likely comes from the Anglo-Saxon Dyddi’s burg, probably referring to a man known as Dyddi whose stronghold or township was near or on a low cliff overlooking a place where the River Mersey could be forded.

The RSPB was founded in Didsbury in 1889. Siemens occupies the Sir William Siemens House in West Didsbury, and the head office of BA CityFlyer is in Didsbury. In terms of industry, Didsbury is considered to form a “stockbroker belt”, as it is Manchester’s most affluent suburb.
