Hale Barns is a village in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, near to Altrincham. Hale Barns has a population of around 9,736 people, and joins nearby Hale and Bowdon as part of the list of the wealthiest settlements in the UK. The name Hale Barns is derived from the tithe barn that used to stand in the place of the village. It was this barn that helped Hale Barns establish itself as a settlement separate from nearby Hale, with the barn creating an integral space for farmers to keep tithes. The barn no longer exists but is recalled in local drawings.
The commercialisation of Hale Barns away from an area of farmland and towards somewhere which formed a commuter village focused around The Square – a shopping precinct. The main A538 road to the precinct – Hale Road – runs through the centre of Hale Barns and leads towards Manchester Airport and Wilmslow.
According to Trafford MBC, Hale Barns is in the top 10% wealthiest areas in England. Hale Barns is home to a number of private sports clubs which providing the local community with facilities for tennis, bowling and football as well as cricket and golf.
