Historically Little Hulton was a village in the ancient Deane parish with a chapel, sometimes called Peel Chapel. Over time, the area became a prominent spot for coal mining before being recommissioned as a council housing space in the mid 1900’s; with developers in Little Hulton aiming to create a suburb that would improve the standard of living and create private spaces, greenspace and a sense of community for the new residents. By 1962, over 3,000 new homes had been built to meet this new demand.

The name Hulton likely comes from a personal surname – Hulton was first found in the town of Lancashire at Little Hulton where “the Hultons were the early lords”.

In the early 2000’s, UK Coal worked to restore the ground of Little Hulton after its extensive mining past; intending to create more than 250 hectares of woodland and leisure space, to include an industrial estate and parkland. Work is progressing to upgrade the walkway and cycleway routes along a former railway line.

The area also has a range of active resident and community groups who are working with the council and its partners to provide activities and improve the quality of life for local people.
