Development of the site of the former Agecroft Colliery into an industrial park has provided employment to many living in the local town.
The name Pendlebury is formed from the Celtic ‘pen’ meaning hill and ‘burh’ referring to a settlement.
The town of Pendlebury has a mix of industrial and residential areas despite the closure of its mines and most of its cotton mills. A part of the old industrial estate also houses a landfill site which is used by Manchester Waste Disposal and which takes 10% of Manchester’s total waste every year.
In the Pendlebury ward, is the beautiful Clifton Country Park which stretches down to the Irwell Valley. Pendlebury and nearby Swinton also hold an annual community network event which is an informal event and is free for anyone to attend.
