Stretford is a historic market town in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, with a population of around 46,910 people. The market town sits on the flat ground between the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal, a total of 3.8 miles from nearby Manchester City Centre and less than 5 miles from local areas Salford and Altrincham. The Bridgeweater runs through the town.

The building of the canal and the industrialisation of Manchester and nearby Trafford Park estate led to the urbanisation of Stretford.

The name Stretford translates to town on a ford across the River Mersey.

Stretford has been the home of Manchester United Football Club since 1910, and has also been home to a number of notable celebrities and wealthy individuals. Situated on the border with Manchester, Stretford became a fashionable place to live in the mid-19th century, with money and resource being channelled into the creation of botanical green spaces and exhibition buildings.

The main shopping centre is Stretford Mall in the commercial centre of Stretford, previously known as Stretford Arndale. The Trafford Centre leisure and shopping complex is local to Stretford, lying just 2.5 miles away.
