Timperley is a suburban village in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, with a population of around 11,061 people. Lying around 6 miles away from the centre of Manchester, Timperley was once considered a part of nearby county Cheshire – its improved links with central Manchester thanks to the Bridgewater Canal made Timperley an important market garden town and in 1974 Timperley was merged into the borough of Trafford.
Average local house prices in Timperley at the time of writing were £343,772, up 6% on the previous year. The majority of sales around Timperley during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £373,309. Terraced properties sold for an average of £300,423, with flats selling for around £182,024.
Timperley has borders with the areas of Altrincham to the South, Sale to the North and the Manchester suburb of Wythenshawe to the East, and the suburb includes a small network of neighbourhoods which all come together to form Timperley.
The name Timperley derives from Timber Leah, the Anglo-Saxon (Old English) for a “clearing in the forest”. This indicates the age of the village as having been established in the 7th or 8th century, adding to the existing assumption that Timperley was once an important area of arable farmland.
Since 1984 Timperley has held a country fair on the open ground of Lark Hill by Thorley Lane. The fair, held every September (usually the second Saturday), has a variety of art, craft and charity stalls. It is organised by a small committee of local residents.
Timperley is home to a number of primary and secondary schools, and thanks to its proximity to nearby Manchester is a hub of commuters and working families.
